Position Summary
The Part-Time Tour Guide is responsible for delivering engaging, accurate, and inclusive guided tours while supporting daily operations of the Welcome Center. This role combines public-facing customer service, educational interpretation, and logistical coordination, with an emphasis on working with diverse audiences, including travelers, children, families, and school groups.
Essential Functions
Tour Delivery & Interpretation:
- Conduct guided tours using established scripts, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and engagement.
- Adapt tour delivery based on audience type, including children, families, and large field trip groups.
- Present inclusive, culturally responsive, and historically accurate information reflecting diverse perspectives.
- Plan and adjust tour routes and itineraries based on weather, timing, and group needs.
Visitor Services & Engagement:
- Greet visitors and provide information on tours, local attractions, and community resources.
- Facilitate positive visitor experiences by responding to questions, concerns, and accessibility needs.
- Manage group flow and safety for small and large groups, including school field trips.
Operations & Administrative Support:
- Operate point-of-sale systems to process transactions for tours and retail items.
- Answer phone calls and respond to email inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of transactions, bookings, and visitor interactions.
- Keep the Welcome Center clean, organized, and stocked with materials.
Transportation & Equipment:
- Safely operate a 14-passenger vehicle in accordance with organizational policies (no CDL required).
- Transport and operate a vending cart and related equipment as needed.
- Ensure all tour equipment is maintained and ready for use.
Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with staff to support programming, outreach, and daily operations.
- Follow all organizational policies, including safety and security procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) screening.
- Ability to pass a background check, including eligibility to work with children.
- Strong verbal communication skills and comfort speaking in front of groups.
- Basic computer proficiency (email, internet, mobile devices, point-of-sale systems).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with children, families, or school groups in an educational, museum, camp, or tour setting.
- Experience in public history, education, tourism, hospitality, or a related field.
- Knowledge of Athens history, culture, and local attractions.
- Experience facilitating programs or managing large groups.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to safely operate a 14-passenger vehicle.
- Ability to push and maneuver a vending cart.
Work Environment
- Combination of indoor and outdoor work in a public-facing setting.
- Regular interaction with large groups, including children and school groups.
- Weekend, evening, and holiday availability may be required.
